Enrolling in a college course when you’re over 40 might be an eye-opening experience!
Many baby boomers who are either voluntarily retired or people who have lost their job because of the downturn in the economy are interested in finding something to occupy their time and maybe
provide some income… many in this group are the kind of people who want to keep their mind challenged too so many of them are considering getting some new skills and maybe going back to college.
People born between 1946 and 1964 are known to belong to the most educated generation…
Those baby boomers are the kind of people who consider themselves lifelong learners and it’s been quite common over the last 30-40 years to see college classes populated with students in a wide age-range,maybe men and women choosing to get some extra training between jobs or after devoting some years to child rearing. Learning doesn’t have to stop at a fixed age – with some added maturity we might all be better prepared to take in some extended knowledge.
If you’re over 40, some of the following reasons to go back to school might strike a chord:
A lot has changed over the last 20 or more years especially at the community college level where there is more variety in the courses and in the student population. Your life’s experiences have changed you too and you might be interested in something entirely different from the jobs you have been involved in for a large part of your life.
Some of you boomers may be adding to the knowledge you already have in your field.
Learning something new (or actively learning what you already know) may give you a higher chance for a promotion that would get you a higher salary. Oftentimes, Baby Boomers go on to earn a
Masters,PhD, or complete other graduate courses to help them add more value to their resume or more dollars in their paychecks.
Change is Good.
Some people initially embarked on a career they weren’t entirely happy with because they didn’t really know what kind of career they wanted and then got caught up with family responsibilities… Now it might be invigorating to go learn something new in college – like going from a financial career to spending a few years getting involved in a non-profit or whatever is invigorating because it appeals to new interests you may not even have been thinking of! Now you could get to learn something you actually enjoy!
Educating yourself may be the start of something new and successful in your life. It could also help you earn more income. Going back to college even though you’re no longer in your 20s should be seen as a whole new, exciting phase of your life.
