I remember when Cronkite took sides… he visited Vietnam after the 1968 Tet offensive and wrote and narrated a “speculative, personal” report advocating negotiations leading to the withdrawal of American troops. He ended with these words:“We are mired in stalemate.”
After the broadcast, President Lyndon B. Johnson is supposed to have said, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost middle America.”
He hated to have to retire at 65 but that was the CBS rule at the time… and he lived another 27 years!
