Thousands of baby boomers are hitting 65 beginning this year and going on for the next 19 years – and many are not cash-ready to retire! Many of them are turning to the Internet to look for work at home job opportunities, and there are plenty of options.
Finding a way to boost their income is almost mandatory for most retirees. With the rise in cost of living, medical needs and the economy in a downturn, boomers are thinking about new careers that will supplement their income and keep their minds active.
Some knowledge and talents from former careers or jobs can be turned into a money-making home business on the Internet. Unless you’re thinking that you need more social interaction, meaning an online business may not work for you. However, if chatting online with others partly fulfills your socializing needs, it may be a good fit.
Just a couple possibilities to get you thinking are:
* eBay – there are many ways to make money on eBay, selling products you are somewhat knowledgeable about, with classified ads or even your own store and managing the whole thing online.

* Tutoring – Taking advantage of all that you’ve learned in the past and teaching others. It can all be done online and in the comfort of your home choosing your own hours and without any special equipment, besides a computer and a broadband connection.

* Writing – Good writers can definitely find jobs on the Internet. At first, you may have to charge less than you know you’re worth to establish a reputation. Sites such as elance.com cater to writers and those who need their services. Grant writing and technical writing are especially valued on the Internet.

• Web Content and Web Design – If you’re one of the boomers who is fluent in ‘computereze,’ you could put healthy sums into your bank account by helping the many less experienced internet beginners.

Of course, those are limited examples but you know what your own skills are and when thinking about work at home jobs after your retirement, you probably have considered your motivation to work and how many hours you want to put in to your new career.

There may be skills you haven’t quite mastered but would love to learn and you’re in luck! If you have time to invest in research, there is unlimited information on the Internet, both free and some sites offer free or inexpensive step-by-step training in a chosen area.

Begin by entering your search words in Google and you will get lists of websites and blogs to scan through … as you familiarize yourself with the overwhelming amount of information, you will become adept at refining your searches … I did it a few years ago and you can do it too!

But beware of online ads for work at home jobs that require start-up fees – you really can get started on a shoestring budget.

As you head out for an ‘encore career choice‘, it’s important that it be satisfying for you as well as something that will fatten your bank account.

What are your thoughts and comments on the subject?

If you haven’t downloaded lesson #5 in Melissa’s Ingold’s free course “Getting Your Business Into Shape for 2011″, I want to remind you to do so …
Melissa says in lesson 5: ” … nobody fits perfectly into any particular stereotype, but let me give some examples of common behavior among online entrepreneurs. You might be able to see where you fit in and where you might start correcting your approach to projects.
Are you…
1. The Serial Project Builder: Many online entrepreneurs build one project after another, without taking the time to really research, evaluate and take the steps to ensure the project is a success. Then they’re left with a bunch of stuff with little traffic, fewer sales and not much to show for all that hard work.
2. The Project Starter: Another type of “typical entrepreneur” (if such thing exists) will take so long on each project, over think things and get so paralyzed they don’t launch it. Sometimes they get paralyzed on their first project and never get anything launched. Others will serially start projects that don’t come to fruition.
Don’t be like 1 or 2. Instead, be someone who:

John Nix of Spartansburg, South Carolina remembers: During the summer of 1969 I left the first real job I ever undertook and, after incurring my mothers wrath and a lecture on stability, began to look around for something to do that would be car related.
Having all the ambition of the typical teenage slacker type did not help my pursuit much as the things that most interested me required effort and hard work, two things that I constantly evaded due to the fact that they did not seem to me to be the fun thing to do. It never ceases to amaze me to this very day that the very things that would have made life more interesting to me later could have been obtained with just a little effort and study on my part then.
Things like being a part of a successful racing team in NASCAR or the NHRA could have been a career goal with just a little input on my behalf. I grew up in the heart of NASCAR country and after training at the local High School Vocational Center had the machinist skills and the contacts to have gotten involved. But the laziness in me was a beast that I could not tame at the time. I must admit that at that age I was the consummate quitter. I abandoned any arduous task ever undertaken as soon as it stopped being fun.

This was one of the character faults that I possessed that made my mother gnash her teeth, both upper and lower plates, in frustration. In any event I had just left a perfectly respectable job as a bagboy for the now defunct Community Cash grocery store and was looking for that certain perfect job, the qualities of which … read the rest of this humorous story at:

“We all need models for how to live from retirement to past 80–with joy,” writes George Vaillant, M.D., director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development. This groundbreaking book pulls together data from three separate longevity studies that, beginning in their teens, followed 824 individuals for more than 50 years. The subjects were male Harvard graduates; inner-city, disadvantaged males; and intellectually gifted women.

Vaillant took this advice to heart. In Aging Well, he presents personal narratives about people from these studies whom he interviewed personally in their 70s and 80s. He describes their history, relationships, hardships, philosophies, and sources of joy. We learn their perspectives and what makes them want to get up in the morning.

Dr. Dychtwald
Reading and listening to warnings and predictions about the poor prospects retiring baby boomers might soon be facing,
I was reminded of an expression I’ve often heard “when one door closes another one opens” sometimes offered to someone who has
just suffered some major disappointment such as losing a job or maybe not getting the house or apartment they were hoping to get.
With the national economy crisis we are all going through now, the option to hang on to their job for a few more years after 62 or 65 might not even be in the cards for boomers, but the internet – another door – has opened up new possibilities!
