Building an Online Work from Home Income | Frustrations and Rewards!

In this post I want to provide information and direction to readers who wish to produce a work from home income.

In the past few weeks I’ve been narrowing the direction of this blog in an effort to provide useful information about building an online income.

There are at least two aspects of living your life on your terms that need to be considered 1. being mentally ready to make the transition from a ‘JOB’ and a paycheck 2. deciding how to earn enough to pay the bills! There are all kinds of practical consideration like having a little chunk of money saved up before cutting loose … I’ll skip over that since it so elementary!

Most of us took a job after getting out of school and were congratulated for being responsible! Now that you wish to live life on your terms, take time to consider some alternatives or you might be getting involved in various online schemes that will waste time, money and energy because they didn’t work out!

‘Income Trilogy Report’ by Steve Scott of ‘Steve Scott Site’

Steve Scott of ‘Steve Scott Site’, one of the sources of information I’ve been referring you to has written an excellent ebook ‘IncomeTrilogyReport.pdf‘ that he offers for free at his blog. He draws on several years experience he has in making a good income with affiliate marketing, to describe three basic ways to make an on online work from home income.

Briefly, these are 1.writing for a living, 2.affiliate marketing 3.publishing ebooks etc. Since these match some of the ways I have directed my efforts to earn a work from home income I have decided they will be the focus of my writing on this blog.

Steve Scott’s Income Trilogy Report’s 88 pages are divided as follows: a few pages answering Internet questions and then pages 14 through 35 about different aspects of writing for business, pages 37 through 54 about affiliate marketing and pages 56 through 77 about information products he labels as long term income. Then some more general and valuable information about business.

I have written some articles about the business of freelance writing, ghostwriting, PLR etc. on this blog – titles will show as related articles below this post – and of course writing is required for a lot of the online business you might be doing such as affiliate marketing.

Writing for your business would not be like writing for your english teacher … you need to be able to describe a product or get a point across like you’re writing to a friend, and you’ll do fine even if you make spelling mistakes as long as you take time to proofread before you publish.

If you don’t feel confident creating or promoting information products or even writing articles there are freelance professionals you can pay to take over and PLR providers who research subjects they write about and sell their packs of 5 or 10 articles at very reasonable rates; this helps get around the problem of lacking inspiration and all that is needed is to slightly rewrite these articles to add your personality.

I will be writing more about the other parts of Steve Scott’s report. There is plenty of ground to cover and I will continue to write on these subjects.

After a few days, I wanted to know more than is included in the free User’s Guide. This is where Mr. Cheshire shines. I easily learned exotic things such as how to change an error in an author’s name. I was converting my own material into Kindle format and putting it on my Kindle in no time. Additionally, I learned how to get the most out of the free whispernet cellular service connected with Kindle to track flights etc. As Mr. Cheshire notes, the machine is god for far more than reading on the plane, it can help you get to the right gate too, and on time! We invested in a powerful machine. I’d invest a bit more and buy this book to unlock its potential. Thumbs way up!

Step 2: Find Affiliate Products to Promote

Head to my two favorite places – ClickBank and PayDotCom. Those aren’t the only two affiliate communities available – you also have the chance to market tangible items through sites like Amazon, for example. There are many others but let’s get started with these for now! (see recommended resources)

In ClickBank, I can instantly see a whole list of affiliate options when I type in (in quotes) “dog training.” The ClickBank products you see almost all pay out at over $20.00 per sale.

You want to go through and review each sales letter to see if you feel it will convert well. Then use the Create Hoplink to create a file of your affiliate links. You’ll want to cloak them, of course – but have the raw link on file for your own records. There are 30 products listed on ClickBank at the time of this writing specifically for dog training.

Next head to PayDotCom and check out what’s there. (see recommended resources )

Now you can go with smaller, more niche specific products to promote, or go with a more broad dog training product that has a higher price tag (and ultimately more commission for you).

In the PayDotCom system, you see products specific to each breed, but you also see a $97 product with a 50% payout that covers dog training in general. You’ll want to pick and choose among the pages of product possibilities based on how you set up your email capture system to promote your free report.

If you have a site specifically for Pekingese dog owners, then go with that e-Book. But mix it up and see if the higher priced product converts better with the same crowd. You want to give them many choices on what they buy … and make more successful sales!

If you decide you do want to promote tangibles, go to Amazon and see what types of things are available in your niche. Conducting a quick scan for dog training, I find print books, dog training collars, DVDs, whistles, clickers and more.

Step 3: Set Up Your Home on the Web

It can be a WordPress blog on your own domain or a minisite with a squeeze page on it or a full-on content site with hundreds of articles – a WordPress.org blog is the easiest one to install and you can easily find a theme to match your niche’s subject out of the hundreds of free theme offered on the WordPress.org site. (see recommended resources)

You will need a domain name and the first choice is between dot.com, dot.net, dot.org that cost around $9 to $10. A dot info domain only cost $1 to $2 and some people believe in them … it does seem that when that option is seen through a non marketer’s eye it doesn’t matter.

I asked several of my non-marketing friends about domain extensions “You know how there is dot.com and dot.net and dot.org? What do you think of when you hear about a dot.info domain? What would you consider that site to be?”

All of them said they’d consider it an information website – an authority site. They wouldn’t expect to see a sales letter there (consumers avoid sites they think will do nothing but sell to them if they’re just searching for information). They like to find valuable information that’s not biased.

So let’s think about that, then. If you, as an affiliate, have a dot.info domain and you construct it PROPERLY with good information so that when they land, they see value and get freebies in exchange for opting to your list, they’re going to have a good first impression of your site.

There is a lot of free information on the internet and it’s very tempting to spend hours everyday reading and gathering all the information you think you might need to start some form of internet marketing business.

Wandering from blog to website to blog you could be spending a lot of time somehow believing that you will find all the information you need to start your own business and of course this might happen if you know what you’re shopping for!

When you go shopping for ingredients for a meal you start with a list in hand for the specific ingredients you know you are missing so when you explore the internet for information it would make sense to be looking for answers to questions you already have!

However, if you don’t have a definite plan, you’re going to run into business models you had not even thought about so you get a glimmer of another way you could be doing business and begin to follow that path until some other tempting offer catches your eye!

Then you have the problem of copying, printing and filing all that information … I know what that’s like because I did it all and I ended up more confused in spite of the piles of so-called information I was accumulating and all my newsletter subscriptions.

I got some binders, and spent many hours organizing and filing so that even if I was not actually in business yet I had a file clerk … ME! At the end of a day spent in that file clerk role I would sometimes experience the sense of accomplishment a company employee gets after a job well done but only for a moment – no paycheck!

Many times when I was in a marketing forum, following some enthusiastic exchanges between a few members on a quest of their own, I would think “there is a good idea” and print out the whole discussion … I did that for months spending time and money because I would occasionally buy ebooks and programs and try different things but that information did not fit into an overall plan.

I did end up learning a lot about many different aspects of Internet Marketing but a person needs to come to a decision about the choice of a business model to follow and the most important factor then is to take action – without action there are no possible
results – so I realized that repeatedly seeking that extra information item can be a form of procrastination!

Among a few very interesting marketing blogs where I now know I will find reliable information, one in particular is run by Jon Leger who is highly regarded for his many useful contributions to the success of affiliate marketing entrepreneurs.

I began to regard it with superstition

In fact, I began to regard it with superstition. If it had made so many fortunes, surely it should be capable of making mine. The certainty that the wonderful story – I began to regard it as magic – was in the air, possessed me.

As I started to walk homeward, fingering the solitary nickel in my pocket and contemplating the certainty of riding downtown in the morning, I experienced the sensation of something stealthily pursuing me, as if Fate were treading along behind me, yet never overtaking, and I was conscious that I was possessed with or by the story.

When I reached Union Square, I examined my address book for the home of Sturtevant. It was not recorded there. Then I remembered the cafe in University Place, and, although the hour was late, it occurred to me that he might be there.

He was! In a far corner of the room, surrounded by a group of acquaintances, I saw him. He discovered me at the same instant, and motioned to me to join them at the table. There was no chance for the story, however. There were half a dozen around the table, and I was the furthest removed from Sturtevant. But I kept my eyes upon him, and bided my time, determined that, when he rose to depart, I would go with him.

A silence, suggestive of respectful awe, had fallen upon the party when I took my seat. Everyone had seemed to be thinking, and the attention of all was fixed upon
Sturtevant.

The cause was apparent. He had been telling the story. I had entered the cafe just too late to hear it. On my right, when I took my seat, was a doctor; on my left a lawyer. Facing me on the other side was a novelist with whom I had some acquaintance. The others were artists and newspaper men.

“It’s too bad, Mr. Currier,” remarked the doctor; “you should have come a little sooner, Sturtevant has been telling us a story; it is quite wonderful, really. I say, Sturtevant, won’t you tell that story again, for the benefit of Mr. Currier?” “Why yes. I believe that Currier has, somehow, failed to hear the magic story, although, as a matter of fact, I think he was the first one to whom I mentioned it at all. It was here, in this cafe, too, -at this very table.

Do you remember what a wild night that was, Currier? Wasn’t I called to the telephone, or something like that? To be sure! I remember, now; interrupted just at the point when I was beginning the story. After that I told it to three or four fellows, and it ‘braced them up,’ as it had me.

Perhaps, doctor, you can give some scientific explanation of the influence exerted by the story. It is a sort of elixir manufactured out of words, eh?” From that the company
entered upon a general discussion of theories. Now and then slight references were made to the story itself, and they were just sufficient to tantalize me, -the only one present who had not heard it.

At length, I left my chair, and passing around the table, seized Sturtevant by one arm, and succeeded in drawing him away from the party. “If you have any consideration for an old friend who is rapidly being driven mad by the existence of that confounded story, which Fate seems determined that I shall never hear, you will relate it to me now,” I said, savagely.

Sturtevant stared at me in wild surprise …

Boomers can turn Hobbies into Boomer Income

Kevin Reily answers his own question: “What’s so great about being an infopreneur?” He says:”An infopreneur creates and markets information.As an infopreneur, you will be running a business that packages information into reports, ebooks, videos, audio recordings.”

One very possible realization when you retire or are approaching retirement age is that you might not have enough money to live out the rest of your life. If so, don’t feel like you are the only one in this predicament.

The state of today’s economy and the uncertainty of world affairs at any time have forced deep changes in everyone’s financial security, whether you’re a Baby Boomer or not. Before you start looking for recipes that don’t include anything that tastes good, consider some of your options.

Make an inventory of your personal interests, hobbies, pastimes or secret expertise that you’ve developed over the years. Once you have that list, put it in order of true interest or reliable skill. Then, starting with your favorite activity, fill out the list with the supplies and tools you already have and the ones you need.

With that done, you now have a blueprint for making some extra money, if you have a mind to. While the attraction for jumping on the Internet and selling something is very alluring, it will require some real time, education and training before you can earn a dime online.

Let’s take two home activities that can be turned into both online and offline businesses: gardening and bird feeding.

Gardening is an outstanding way to earn a little bit of money or make your meals tastier, with real opportunities everywhere you look. To start with, if you do not have a yard, you can grow several items in a pot on your balcony to enhance your meals.

Many seed companies are developing container vegetables just for your conditions. They offer tomato plants that will grow in a pot, to name one. Of course, one zucchini seed will grow enough squash in a good-sized pot to feed both you and your neighbors.

If you have a yard large enough for a small garden, grow several different vegetables and consider having a small weekend yard sale for your neighbors who might just be in the same tough spot you are in. Even if they are not having difficulties, your garden yard sale, with prices lower than the store’s prices might be an attraction for the freshness of the produce.

If you are looking for an online side income, put your gardening skills in an ebook or short report and sell it online. You might want to check out Baby Boomer forums for those who are looking for the gardening skills you have.

If you are a bird lover and feed all who fly by your house or apartment, you might have useful information to share on a forum all about bird watching. That information could be your own natural bird feed you’ve developed. If you keep a record of the birds attracted to your feeder, you have valuable information to share.

You can put your formulas in an ebook or short report and include a link to buy it in your forum signature.

Your ebook or short report would be more attractive to bird lovers if you added some photos of the visitors to your feeders. Digital cameras can be your best friend.

Another bird idea for income for you might be creating and building bird feeders from natural materials. A little bit of bark and some twigs can be put together to form enchanting bird feeders. You can sell them to local garden stores or on eBay, for that matter.

This discussion has lightly covered two simple ways to make some extra income in case you wake up one morning and discover that you need it.

That subtitle doesn’t begin to cover the different types of business that can be conducted on eBay, helping boomers make money with opportunities for many different kinds of selling and buying.

Many of us know about selling off some of possessions on eBay to get over a difficult time… and many went on to setting up an eBay store – buying stuff offline and selling it at auction or for a ‘buy now’ price. A tactic of many sellers is to channel the immense amount of traffic eBay gets to their real online businesses.

Boomers also know eBay as a good place to bid on books, music, clothing, sports equipment, all kinds of collector’s items and ‘antiques’

Selling ebooks on eBay was rather simple until March 31 2008 when EBay put a stop to all digital sales (the term ebook stands for electronic book). The attraction in selling ebooks was that delivery could be made by simply emailing a link to the buyer, meaning the seller could be building a mailing list by getting the name and email address of the buyers, making it possible to send follow-up emails.

Whatever motivated EBay’s change of policy, it caused quite a lot of consternation in the ranks of ebook marketers… many felt they had lost their main source of traffic generation.
That’s right, some were making little money with their low priced digital products after paying eBay fees, besides trying to conform to eBay’s rules, all so they could benefit from eBay’s enormous amount of traffic to build up their real internet business.

However, human ingenuity took over very quickly substituting other means of delivery and ebooks are being sold on eBay using methods such as transferring the ebook to a CD that can be listed as a physical product in eBay’s auction or ‘buy now’ categories, or selling the digital ebook using eBay’s classified ads.
