It took me a while picking up a tip here and a hint there to realize that SEO had something to do with:

1. Getting the search engines to discover my blog

2. If the search engines didn’t discover my blog, how would they ever send me any visitors?

So, since no visitors resulted in no business I set out to figure it all out and discovered that the business of search engines is to connect searchers with the websites or blogs where they could find what they needed or wanted. That was a few years ago, long enough so I can talk about it without too much embarrassment!

So if you go to Google and enter “garden furniture”, Google will immediately send you to pages with results listing something about garden furniture! The super-fast connection between your search for “garden furniture” and the pages of results you get is made with sites that are using words associated with your search words and those words are called ‘keywords’.

So in order to have your site show up in results returned by Google, Yahoo or Bing, you need to use the ‘keywords’ that are most likely to match the words entered by people making the searches, and that is the essence of search engine optimization.

SEO is a skill that anyone in the business of selling products or publishing information online needs to learn right at the start of setting up a website or a blog. It makes your site more inviting so you get more traffic from the search engines and the visitors who find information related to their interest are more likely to return.

Besides the all important keywords, there are other factors that matter a lot in optimizing your site and I can imagine that after you see the results you get with just the basics, you might be wondering where to find instructions to help you promote your site to even greater success.

1. You are a hard worker
When you first start a home business, you must be ready to sometimes work
longer hours than the regular 9-5. There’s no fellow employee or boss to
take up the slack. You are the one who has to put in the extra hours.
If you are still working a 9-5 job while starting your business, are you
willing and able to sacrifice some of your leisure time? Can you invest
an extra 2-3 hours per day into building your business?
The time you invest in your business during the building phase will pay
off with big dividends later, when you can take long vacations and have
a flexible schedule.

2. You like to take charge
You don’t wait for others to make the decision or take the lead.
Successful entrepreneurs see an opportunity, seize it, and take full
responsibility to see it through.
When a task or challenge comes up at work, do you seize the
opportunity and take charge? Or do you wait for someone else to take
the initiative?

3. You are a decision maker
As an entrepreneur, you often have to make important decisions, and
make them quickly. You cannot agonize over decisions, or keep putting
them off.
In business, the old adage “You snooze, you lose!” has a lot of merit to
it. Often, opportunities will present themselves, and you must decide
quickly if they are advantageous for your business.
As the boss, you must make important decisions on a regular basis.

4. You are persistent
Success usually does not come overnight, and quite often it’s only those
who persist and push past obstacles that succeed. If you easily give up,
it will be difficult for you to be successful running your own business.
Successful entrepreneurs carry on and do not let minor obstacles stop
them. They keep their eye on the goal and keep moving towards that
goal, even if they have to take detours to get there.

5. You can weather criticism and rejection
Running your own business is not always smooth sailing. There will
always be those who criticize your decisions or reject your ideas. While
you should always be open to bounce back from criticism and carry on,
you can’t let it stop you.
Successful entrepreneurs don’t take criticism personally. Instead, they
learn and improve from the feedback.

6. You desire to create your own destiny
For successful entrepreneurs, it’s not just about making lots of money.
It’s about being your own boss and enjoying the freedom to run your
business as you see fit. Money is not the only reward.

Y = “Yes, this is what I’m like.”
S = “Somewhat, and I feel I could develop this trait.”
N = “No, I’m not like this at all.”

Let’s take two home activities that can be turned into both online and offline businesses: gardening and bird feeding.

Gardening is an outstanding way to earn a little bit of money or make your meals tastier, with real opportunities everywhere you look. To start with, if you do not have a yard, you can grow several items in a pot on your balcony to enhance your meals.

Many seed companies are developing container vegetables just for your conditions. They offer tomato plants that will grow in a pot, to name one. Of course, one zucchini seed will grow enough squash in a good-sized pot to feed both you and your neighbors.

If you have a yard large enough for a small garden, grow several different vegetables and consider having a small weekend yard sale for your neighbors who might just be in the same tough spot you are in. Even if they are not having difficulties, your garden yard sale, with prices lower than the store’s prices might be an attraction for the freshness of the produce.

If you are looking for an online side income, put your gardening skills in an ebook or short report and sell it online. You might want to check out Baby Boomer forums for those who are looking for the gardening skills you have.

If you are a bird lover and feed all who fly by your house or apartment, you might have useful information to share on a forum all about bird watching. That information could be your own natural bird feed you’ve developed. If you keep a record of the birds attracted to your feeder, you have valuable information to share.

You can put your formulas in an ebook or short report and include a link to buy it in your forum signature.

Your ebook or short report would be more attractive to bird lovers if you added some photos of the visitors to your feeders. Digital cameras can be your best friend.

He explains that you need to generate a good idea for a product you believe you would want to promote (a niche), an idea that can support two reports… first a free report that should give some great “why” information and leads to the more detailed “how-to” information of your paid report.

This shows the reader what needs to be done, and the paid report will teach your reader how to do it. I would suggest that this works on two levels because an experienced internet marketer might be able to use the free report for inspiration and add his own “how-to” information, so the free report is useful at different levels…

You can collect “ideas” for your free report by reviewing the marketplace to see what people are buying… it’s much easier to sell people what they want, so go to places where people are buying stuff.

You can look through magazines, online marketplaces, Amazon – and
brainstorm a list of ideas for reports that teach a technique or solve
a problem.

When you read the free report you will see that it is very detailed with drawings and lots of detailed suggestions…
